Taking the heat for slacker coworker

Dear Office-Politics,

I am a project manager for a consulting company. One of my co-workers was hired by the Regional Team Leader who worked with him at their previous company. There are two others that were hired by the Team Leader from the same company and they are without a doubt his favorites and friends.

To make a long story short, this person was assigned a project by me with more than enough time to complete it. He missed the first deadline, then tried to miss the second, all the while telling me that everything was under control until the deadlines would arrive.

When the second deadline was to be missed, I pulled a team together to help, and notified both his supervisor and the Team Leader. He spent the next two weeks leaving us to do his work late nights and weekends, lying about the status of work and other project items, and being rude and confrontational.

This is not the first time that he has failed to complete his work by the due date and typically leaves much of it for me at the last minute. The team was so frustrated at the end of this experience, I made a mistake and vented to the Team Leader, his supervisor, and my supervisor about all that had happened. Because this person is the Team Leader’s friend, nothing was done about him and the blame for all of it was placed on my shoulders for “not managing him”.

I haven’t worked with this person since, but I was recently told by my supervisor that they would like me to start working with him again soon. I feel like this is a no win situation since there are no repercussions for him when he lies or flat refuses to take direction. It has definitely affected my relationship with the Team Leader. Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Taking the heat

Dear Taking the heat,

It appears that the Team Leader either doesn’t know what this individual is like or doesn’t want to accept the truth about him. If you continue to complain about this guy to the team leader it may be viewed as a negative about you. Try this approach instead…

Ask the Team Leader for help and guidance in maximizing this person’s potential. Maybe you are missing some key to getting this guy to perform the way you need him to? Ask the Team Leader to help you develop a plan for managing this person on the next project.

Better yet, ask the Team Leader to get personally involved in helping manage him on this next project. Make sure that the Team Leader gets a chance to see what you have about this individual’s performance. Hopefully, the Team Leader will get the real picture about this guy. Thanks for writing to Office-Politics.

Toxic environment fed by candy-pushing coworker

Dear Office-Politics, I work in a very toxic office. I am on a team with 2 other people. The female, who worked with the male previously, as an assistant and still does, resents me. On the surface she is pleasant and is always pushing candy on people, etc. She has low self esteem and is seeking attention. She talks behind my back and is always trying to stir up trouble with me. There have already been several meetings to discuss this, but nothing has changed. I am tired of the problems and so is the male. I am more qualified, licensed and experienced and she has no intention of getting licensed. I just want to do my job and go home. What can be done? I have tried to be nice, but it doesn't do any good. It seems to kill her if she has to say something positive to me or ...

What can we do about a coworker’s messy desk and body odor

Dear Office-Politics, I work in an office which is made up primarily of cubicles. One of our co-workers has worked here for a very long time (more than 20 years), and keeps her cubicle distressingly messy. There is no surface which is, without exaggeration, less than 10 inches thick with miscellaneous paper and garbage. Old food wrappers are strewn about, along with old documents and personal belongings. Even more disturbing is that this person has very poor personal hygiene. While working, most of us within a four-cubicle range can smell her body odor almost continuously throughout the day. She appears to suffer from depression, because her hair is rarely washed, her clothes are often stained, and her health is poor. Personally, I do not think it is my place to say anything to her about my concerns over her mental health. However, the state of her cubicle is a problem since all of ...

Better route? Business or Technical?

Dear Office Politics, Amongst the companies I've worked for (all have been petrochemical), the professionals that chose the technical route seem to have less opportunity than those professionals that chose the business route. Even women that get engineering degrees tend to go the business route or they can get boxed in. What trends have you observed amongst the professionals you have talked with? Thanks! Trainer/Mentor OFFICE-POLITICS REPLY BY SUSAN BULKELEY BUTLER Dear Trainer/Mentor, This is a good queston. I believe that some technical professionals "let themselves" get boxed in because they don't know where they can go in the business (operations) route. I think more about business operations as these are generally the positions where the senior leadership team generally comes from. Most people in business have technical skills as well as business skills. More importantly, technical professionals don't know where they want to go even in the technical route (to ...

Just enough rope to hang herself

Dear Office-Politics, I work for a small company with only about 20 employees. Recently my boss hired two women who are sisters on a 3/4 time basis, which has been unheard of in our company, both the shift hours and the fact that they are related. The older of the two sisters soon became a problem for us, the younger sister is not an issue. The older sister quickly established herself as a favorite with the owner. In the few months that she has been there she has tried to take over and make decisions for all departments. The boss gave her a lot of responsibility to start out with, and everyone noticed that she had problems getting her job done. It was her responsibility to make sure that all the departments received their work for the day first thing in the morning. It is often late afternoon ...

My supervisor and I bid on the same job…

Dear Office-Politics, My supervisor and I bid on the same job. Through office gossip, it was pretty clear that this was a set up to let her go. In fact, the hiring supervisor asked to me to apply for this job. I ended up with the position and she has been given 60 days to work in HR and to find something else. My dilemma -- she hired me, has been extremely supportive and nice, encouraged me to turn in an application for the job, etc. I am feeling guilty and want to know if I should send her a note. If she is working in the same building for the next 60 days, chances are that I will run into her. Any advice? Ostracized by rumors

Dear Office-Politics, I'm a teacher at a junior high school. Three teachers out of ten in my department conspired to remove me from the chairmanship. Two were senior teachers and the third was of the same loud domineering type who think relatively quiet, thoughtful individuals are weak and unable to lead. They wanted to be the ones calling the shots from the get go and tried. That was three years ago. I'm a fair individual who ran things openly and by majority opinion on various issues. Things didn't always go their way and they didn't like that. At some point they began spreading rumors about me throughout the school and beyond. A case of character assassination I suppose. The less senior of the three is very charismatic and outgoing and covers a lot of ground. They were very subtle in there attack of my 'character', nice enough to me when in ...
