“Courage is a kind of power akin to but more substantial than charisma. Courageous people are at once admired and feared, largely because they appear to lack fear themselves and also because they are unpredictable. These attributes make them an anomaly. As one manager told me after standing up to a superior who was clearly in the wrong, “People occasionally stop by and say things like ‘No one will mess with you anymore. I sure know I won’t.'” There’s a certain admiration in comments like this. Courage compels respect and attention no matter how small the act, no matter how well supported.
