OFFICE-POLITICS 101
About Dr. John

"Construction Criticism "

April 28, 2003
Dr. John,

Just before Christmas our office was informed that we would be going through renovations begining in January. Management assured us that we would not have to deal with working in such conditions, but that we would be transferred to another office for the period of the renovations. Low and behold January comes and yes the renovations did begin but guess what, we are all still working in the same office. The working conditions are awful. Not only do we have to work with dust and dirt, freezing cold (they are upgrading the heating system), electrical breakers blowing and files all over the place but we also have to deal with complaints by our clients. The whole thing is causing so much stress for everyone. We inquire everyday when we will be moved to another office and they just say soon. Many of us are on the brink of calling the labour board on them for allowing us to work in such conditions. What is the procedure when reporting companies to the labour board and what are the ramifications to the employees? We've just about had it.

Just About Had It

Dear Just About Had It,

The situation you describe is dangerous to your health and not a fit working environment. It sounds like your patience with your employer has been exhausted and your plan to take the matter to the Labour Relations Board seems a reasonable next step.

I don't know the procedure for making such a complaint myself. There is in all likelihood a website for the Labour Board and I suggest that you have a look at that and take your direction from it. Another possibility is simply to give the Board a phone call. I'm sure that part of their service is to respond to inquiries such as yours.

Keep at it and get some action soon.

Dr. John
